Summary; People who opposed the Unification Church

2009年8月12日

Q&A「People who have opposed the Unification Church (UC)」
Why has the abduction and confinement of over 4000 people occurred?

Q1. The ones who have been persuading UC members to abandon their faith are Christian ministers. Why have they been opposing UC so badly?

A1. Christian ministers feel that the teachings of the UC and its very existence are to blame for the fall of Christianity. The ministers who began confinements and persuasion said the following: "We will not abandon this activity because the UC has used the name Christianity, they interpret the Bible inaccurately and deceive people”. Their religious motive is that "the UC is not Christian."

Q2. For the anti-UC activities, not only Christian ministers but also leftist journalists and lawyers have cooperated. What is the reason for this cooperation?

A2. Facing these odds the UC has advanced its missionary work and expanded its foundation enormously The ones who heightened this "sense of crisis" were the left-wing forces aiming to communize Japan, and Christianity, which never succeeded in properly Christianizing Japan. They have the common goal "to squeeze the UC out of Japan".

Q3. Why are the anti-UC groups ignoring the serious “violation of human rights” such as UC member abductions, and confinements and were pressured to withdraw for long years?

A3. The purpose of the anti-UC group is to crush the UC. Therefore they report aggressively their perceived problem of “Spiritual Sales”, but don’t up the issue of compulsion conversion by “Abduction and Confinement” because it's disadvantageous for them.

Q4. The JCP (Japan Communist Party) has openly shown their hostility towards the UC and IFVOC, and has treated them as enemies to the point of hostility. What history of offense and defense do you have?

A4. For 10 years, from 1968 to 1978, the IFVOC (International Federation for Victory over Communism) criticized the JCP. Consequently, the JCP had to rewrite its bible "Communist Reader” and soon it became out of print. By the defeat in the Kyoto Prefectural Governor election, the Communist Prefectural Government which lasted for 28 years came to an end. In June 1978 the then chairman of the JCP Kenji Miyamoto declared war saying "I will stand in the front line to exterminate the IFVOC”. (from the Communist Party’s daily newspaper “Red Flag”)

Q5. The National Network of Lawyers (NNL) against Spiritual Sales aggressively took up the "Spiritual Sales" issue which started in 1987, and expanded the attack against the UC. Mass media has actively covered the contents announced by the NNL. Please tell about the background of the establishment of this group?

A5. In the 1960's, the IFVOC movement developed to stop the communization and socialization of Japan. Also, a friendly group to the IFVOC, the “National Conference to Promote the establishment of the Anti Espionage Law" advanced the creation of this "Anti Espionage Law". NNL was founded, with political intentions, to counter this national movement.

Q6. It is said that preparatory operations were done by former UC members in the background of anti- "Spiritual Sales" campaign. Could you explain this?

A6. Before launching anti- "Spiritual Sales" campaigns, opponents had former members file lawsuits to have their donations refunded, then they had their customers ask for refunds, making them victims. Once the campaign was launched by mass media, people who had initially been satisfied with their purchases turned suspicious, and called the anti-Spiritual Sales customer center to consult their situation. The mass media picked up on these cases and reported them. This was how the campaign gradually expanded.

Q.7 I heard that abduction and confinement incidents against UC members were committed as "family affairs", and that "compulsion conversion groups" (deprogrammers) do not exist. Which is true?

A7. The deprogramming often seems like "family affairs" because families carry out abduction and confinement. The anti-UC groups have guided families saying "It's better to let experts handle the deprogramming idea", so the "persuader" as a specialist exists.

In order for opponents to conceal the fact that they are behind the criminal acts of confinement, they spread this disinformation.

Q8. What UC calls “abduction and confinement” are, according to the opposing groups, “protection and rescue” missions and merely a “discussion” among relatives. Which is true?

A8. Relatives isolate and confine UC members in an apartment or the like it by saying that they are making an environment for dialogue, but their purpose is to force him/her to lose their faith by blocking off contact with the outside world and making the members meet opposing ministers.

In case of Mr. Toru Goto who refused to abandon his faith, his confinement lasted for long period of 12 years and 5 months. This long confinement is due to his refusal to have his “faith broken”. How can this be called “discussion”?

Q9. It is reported that there are some members who suffer PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) after being abducted and confined. Among those who were abducted and confined what is the ratio of those suffering PTSD?

A9. There are more than 4,000 people who went through deprogramming over forty three years, since 1966 according to the UC. A figure of the opponents once put it at “5,000 at least” (Monthly magazine “Gekkan Gendai” Nov. 2004). While the UC does not grasp the real situation, there seems to be more who may suffer PTSD. We believe that those who suffer PTSD are substantial in number because of the persistent deprogramming efforts exerted on them. Unfortunately the UC does not have figures.

Q10. It is said that in Christian history the persecution in Japan was the severest. Persecution to Christians under the Roman Empire is well-known. What is the reason for the persecution to Christians in Japan to be the hardest?

A10. The reason for the incomparable severity of Christian persecution in Japan is that persecutors didn't allow believers to become martyrs so the authorities kept torturing their hearts and bodies till they abandoned their faith “without letting them alive or killing”. Persecutors continued their sly, underhand and cruel tortures called “Hiaburi (Burning), Takenokohiki (Sawing by bamboo), Anaturi (Hanging in a hole), Unzen Jigokuseme (Burning by the hot spring water of Unzen), etc”.

Q11.How did the end of long and cruel Christian persecution come about?

A11. Unfortunately the Japanese government didn’t stop persecution to Christians by recognizing “freedom of belief”. The trigger was the blame and pressure from foreign countries for the persecution called "Urakami, the fourth collapse".

Q12. I heard that the information which Parents Association of Opposition spread was taken up by a Diet Inquiry to study what had been the problem. Also, I heard that Mr. Yoshifu Arita kept spreading a lot of groundless information. What kind of information are they concretely?

A12. The anti-UC groups kept spreading rumors which entrapped parents of UC believers into insecurity such as “lynching is performed in the UC”. “There are missing persons”, “members will become criminals”. “There were many rumors that UC believers are criminals (Hiroshima University professor murder case)”.

Q13. Former members say “I was tricked by the UC.”, but why does he or she say “tricked”? Does UC really trick people?

A14. The deprogramming has much to do with why former members say, “I was tricked”. After former members get deprogrammed by an opposing minister, he or she comes not to believe the UC any more, saying, “I was tricked.” UC does not trick people.

Q14. An opponent has been accusing the UC saying he/she has been involved in “Blood sharing rituals” for many years, but what is the truth?

A14. In fact “Blood sharing rituals” never existed. This defamation was propagated by ministers Mr. Myung Hwan Tak and Mr. Satoshi Moriyama. They are "groundless accusations", having no base in fact. In fact, Mr. Myung Hwan Tak who originally accused the UC of "Blood sharing rituals" later confessed that "there was no evidence."

Blood sharing rituals

Q15. How should we counter the accusation that the UC is involved in “Blood sharing rituals”? They say, “Since Chapter II of the DP mentions that the fall occurred through a sexual relationship, to restore it the reverse sexual relationship is needed. That is why for sure they did ‘Blood sharing rituals’”.

A15. It is Mr. Sadao Asami that spreads false rumors through these accusations. Mr. Asami doesn’t understand UC doctrine and interprets it inaccurately. Because the fall was caused by "Immoral behavior", the importance of “so not being immoral” “Being abstinent before marriage” is explained in the UC. This “Being abstinent before marriage”; is the "Reverse process".

Q16. What is the truth about Rev. Moon’s story that he received a revelation from Jesus on April 17th 1935? An opposition faction said that it was a fabricated story and that there were conflicts even among different publications of the UC, and it was irresponsible.

A16. Checking several publications of the UC, we could find some discrepancies between them, as the opposition factions mentioned. Sometimes the information about the revelation was brought to Japan in fragments or the person who got the information misunderstood. And the differences of custom between Korea and Japan are also related to it. Those are the reasons for the conflicting stories. In the early Christian church age, there were some conflicts between the Gospels and other documents of the New Testament too. (Note: There are some contradictions between the four Gospels also.) Jews accused Christians saying that Christian documents are in contradiction. Negative ministers similarly accuse.

Q17. I heard the criticism of an opponent that “There is the photo in which Rev. Sun Myung Moon is crossing the sea carrying Mr. Jeong Hwa Pak on his back. But the person who is carrying him is not Rev. Moon, but a different person. You are mistaking that person in the photo for Rev. Moon. The person who deceives people by making such a moving story cannot be the Lord of the Second Advent.” What are the real facts of the case?

A17. In 1984, Mr. Jeong Hwa Park who visited Japan testified, “This photo shows me and Master Moon”. Since the person concerned was testifying, of course, people accepted his story without the slightest doubt that the photo shows Rev. Moon and Mr. Park. But later it was discovered that it doesn’t show Rev. Moon and Mr. Park. However, Rev. Moon was not lying, nor did the UC try to deceive. Because Mr. Park ,the person concerned, testified, UC came to believe.

Even though this photo might not show Rev. Moon and Mr. Park, the fact that Rev. Moon went to South without forsaking Mr. Park who lost the use of his leg is not denied.

Q18. I heard the criticism of an opponent that “The quotation of Bible verses on the book of ‘Divine Principle’ is inaccurate. It isn’t truth.” How should we think about this?

A18. It is true that there are incomplete quotations of Bible verses in the “Divine Principle” but it is the matter of the level of the completion of expression. It means that the Bible verses which were quoted with the intention of trying to clarify the content of the Divine Principle are inappropriate. It doesn’t mean the theory of Divine Principle itself is wrong.

Q19. I heard from an opponent that “Truth is unchanging. But ‘Divine Principle’ is changing by deletion, addition and correction. This kind of theory must not be truth.” How shall we think about this?

A19. Surely at one time, there were some omitted parts in the Divine Principle. However, that was based on the consideration of ministry. In the chapter of the Lord of Second Advent there were missing parts. The process of Biblical formation was also like this, rewriting, adding and deleting have been done in the Holy Bible, and it has been changing as time and environment change. We can’t help but feel that those opposing ministers who are bent on criticizing UC shut their eyes to the problems of the Holy Bible. They hold grudges against UC and are insincere.

Q20. It can be said that Japan which still now doesn’t intend to enforce the incident of abduction and confinement committed by relatives with apostasy purpose is a nation where the freedom of religion has not been established. Please tell me the historical background of how freedom of religion has been established in European countries.

A20. It was “Constitutional Amendment Article 1” established in the United States of America in which the freedom of religion was codified for the first time in human history on Nov. 3, 1791. Trampling over the freedoms of thought, speech, and associations, etc. the Catholic Church, the Church of England and the Protestant Church expelled, suppressed, and in some cases, fought each other, and among relatives over belief. The establishment of “Constitutional amendment Article 1” came from such deep reflection that “We must not repeat such historical mistake anymore.”
